What does gold-filled mean?
Gold filled jewelry is a specific type of layered metal product that consists of a base metal (usually brass or copper) with a layer of gold mechanically bonded to it. Here are the key things to understand about gold filled:
1. Composition: By law, gold filled items must have a layer of gold that is at least 1/20 (5%) of the total weight of the item. This is much more gold than gold plated items.
2. Construction: The gold layer is bonded using heat and pressure, creating a much more durable bond than plating. It won't rub off or wear away quickly like plated items.
3. Markings: Gold filled items are often marked as "GF," "1/20 12K GF," or similar. The first number indicates the ratio of gold, while the number before "K" indicates the purity of the gold used.
4. Durability: Gold filled jewelry can last for many years or even decades with proper care, unlike gold plated items which may show wear within months.
5. Value: It's more expensive than gold plated but much less expensive than solid gold, making it a popular middle-ground option.
This is different from gold plated jewelry, which has a much thinner layer of gold applied through an electrochemical process, and vermeil, which specifically uses sterling silver as the base metal with gold plating.
